Gulistān 34:49

about

I've spent the last 20 years listening to Sorabji's Gulistān as I fall asleep, its oceanic textures deeply intertwined with hypnagogic dream states. This recording of Sorabji's monumental composition is the culmination of a 3-year project and labor of love.

Gulistān is one of the most beautiful works ever composed for piano and is rarely performed due to its technical complexity. The score was completed just before lunch on Aug 13, 1940, the day of a massive German attack on England (Adlertag) during the Battle of Britain. Sorabji was likely living in London at this time and survived the impending Blitz.

The music is inspired by the book Gulistān (The Flower Garden), written by the Persian poet Sa'di in 1258. Sorabji wanted to create an atmosphere of a lushly perfumed rose garden, and he did so with an astonishingly rich and unique musical language. He considered Gulistān to be one of his best works.

The digital download of this recording comes with 12 artworks inspired by the music and Persian miniature painting. Each artwork is available as a 7.5" square print in a matted 12" square frame.
